Why Donate?
Teen Talk Sexuality Education relies heavily on donations and foundations to
support our mission.
In May 2008, the Journal of Adolescent Health published a study demonstrating
that youth receiving comprehensive sexuality education had a substantially lower
risk of teenage pregnancy than students who received either abstinence-only
education or no education at all. Teen pregnancy is closely linked to social
issues such as poverty, health issues, lack of education, child welfare,
irresponsible fatherhood, and increased risky behavior.
If teen birth rates continue to rise in California, we will pay an even larger
financial cost as well as a societal cost. If more money were put towards
primary prevention, such as comprehensive sexuality education, we would see a
significant reduction in social issues hurting our children, from school failure
and crime to neglect and child abuse.
Furthermore, 15 to 24-year-olds represent only a quarter of the sexually active
population, although they acquire more than half of all new STDs every year. The
estimated medical cost of STDs in youth 15-24-year-olds is $11,000,000 for San
Mateo County.
Now more than ever, we need to invest in primary prevention, such as
comprehensive sexuality education.
- For every $100 donated to TTSE, one student will receive Teen Talk.
