Overview of Teen Talk
How Teen Talk Meets Education Code

Teen Talk is a comprehensive sexuality education curriculum that was created by Teen Talk Sexuality Education (TTSE), formerly the Teen Pregnancy Coalition of San Mateo County. The program consists of various subject areas covering sexual health, ranging from personal values clarification to communication, decision making, and abstinence. Teen Talk is in compliance with the California Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Act. In an open forum, educators discuss sexuality and the changes that adolescents face during their years in middle school. Teen Talk is based on the Health Belief Model and social learning theories that encourage students to examine what they believe, using information that helps them expect positive outcomes for a given behavior, whether that is choosing to use a birth control method or to be sexually abstinent.

Philosophy of Teen Talk

The philosophy behind Teen Talk is that people should learn as much as possible about their bodies, minds and personal beliefs in order to keep themselves and the people they care about healthy and happy. Therefore, everyone is entitled to honest, non-biased, medically accurate information.

Importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Without honest, non-biased, medically accurate information, young people are left vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, unintended pregnancy, sexual coercion, abuse and exploitation. Young people are subjected to confusing and conflicting messages about sexuality, while adults are often unable or unwilling to discuss these important topics with them. Therefore, it is essential that all youth receive comprehensive sexuality education.

Teen Talk uses participatory teaching methods that actively involve the students and allow for discussion and reflection. Teen Talk, Middle School was designed for students 11-14 years old to:

• Increase knowledge
• Reduce misinformation
• Increase communication with parents or other trusted adults
• Teach tolerance and respect
• Increase refusal and negotiation skills
• Clarify values
• Increase self-efficacy

Teen Talk lessons are consistent with youth culture today. The curriculum was designed for youth in diverse racial or ethnic groups. Teen Talk is appropriate for youth considered at “high risk” for STDs/pregnancy, as well as youth who live in counties with lower rates of STDs and teen pregnancy.

An outcome evaluation of Teen Talk in 2008 found that program recipients had less sex, were more knowledgeable about birth control methods and STDs, and had a greater knowledge of teen clinics and their services. Students participating in Teen Talk were also more comfortable talking with parents/guardians about sexual health.

Training Information

Teen Talk Sexuality Education provides interactive trainings on Teen Talk. The goal of our trainings is to increase the knowledge, skills and comfort level of those using Teen Talk and teaching comprehensive sexuality education. We strive to promote medically accurate, age-appropriate information. Trainings on Teen Talk cover best practices in teen pregnancy and STD prevention, focusing on California Education Code sections 51930-51939 and the Health Education Content Standards for California Public Schools, within the Growth, Development and Sexual Health area. Continuing Education Units are available.
